Dawson Local Harvest for March 2nd

Soup’s On!

HI EVERYBODY!

I think most everyone who’s a member of The Harvest likes to cook. I know I do, at least a little, and it certainly doesn’t hurt to have some amazing Vegetables to help things along. So I like to include the occasional recipe to take advantage of what’s available. This time it’s Turnip, Leek, and Potato Soup!

Start with a little olive oil on medium and add a small diced onion and 3-4 of LEILANI’S delicious Leeks chopped. Saute’ until tender; add 1-2 cloves garlic minced and saute’ a minute. Now add an order of LEILANI’S Purple-topped Turnips and 2 medium potatoes, both peeled and diced. Now add 32 oz. chicken stock, vegetable stock, or water, bring to a boil then cover & simmer 45 min.

Almost done! Blend in a blender so it’s creamy. Add salt, fresh ground pepper, and a little thyme and parsley. If you like your soups a little creamier add a little half-&-half or cream. And for those of you who really want to cheat, use potato soup as a base (quicker and less fuss).

There are always lots of ways to “flavor-up” your meals, whether it’s fresh Vegetables for dinner, a refreshing Jun or tasty Kraut for a Saturday-night change-up, superb free-range Ground Beef for Killer Chili, and that’s just a few ideas. Get Creative and see what you can come up with.

New Additions to This Week’s Dawson Harvest

HI EVERYONE

Here’s a quick Update on what’s New this week. MY DAILY BREAD has added Blushing Peach Jam to their line of Jellies and Jams. This is a tasty blend of peaches and strawberries that’s quite nice on toast or with peanut butter. Meanwhile, LEILANI’S has added a new Vegetable to their cool-weather Produce line, the Purple-topped Root Turnip, a beautiful cooking Turnip with (what else?) a lavender-purple top half. It’s extremely nutritious, can be boiled. steamed, baked, and sliced for soups and salads. Next up, Leeks with their garlic-oniony flavor they’re fabulous for soups and stir-frys. Also back is the unusual purple-sheaf Green Onions, like a green onion with great color.

There’s really a lot available in the listings for This Week’s Market. If you take a good look around at some of the more unusual offerings you can find some wonderful gems. Take a chance and try something new!

HI EVERYBODY!

Their aren’t many local farms that grow year around. Fortunately, LEILANI’S is one of those, and are offering plenty of crisp, great-tasting cool-weather Vegetables! New this week are beautiful white Hakurei Turnips, excellent sliced in salads, or boil them like potatoes (1/3 the calories). Also available right now are Greens like Lettuce, Spinach, a couple pf varieties of Kale, Swiss Chard and tasty Asian Bok Choi.

Don’t forget the wonderful healthy Beverages from CULTURAL TRADITIONS. Their Juns, Kvasses, and Kifers have really different tastes that are quite tasty and are loaded with probiotics. You’ll see them in the Fermented / Probiotic Foods listing of The Market.

Happening for February at LEILANI’S is crisp winter Greens, including Collards, Spinach, and my favorite Swiss Chard, which is an excellent light side dish when sauteed (olive oil & garlic) and a great taste addition to salads. Speaking of salads spicy Red Turnips sliced are a great flavor accent, and cooked Turnips are a tasty low-calorie alternative to potatoes. Bok Choi is also available as a nice flavor for oriental and stir-fry.

Want to remind you that CULTURAL TRADITIONS has some very interesting Sauerkrauts like Garlic Pickle, Ginger Tumeric, “Kimchi” style and Traditional Russian Red. MY DAILY BREAD Moves To LEILANI’s!

HI EVERYBODY!

Remember when I said we had BIG NEWS about a month ago? And then we left you wondering when you heard nothing more? Well, after a few snags, here it is: MY DAILY BREAD has moved to LEILANI’S!

Dabrielle and Bruce Wills started MY DAILY BREAD over 15 years ago but at well past retirement age it simply became too difficult for them to keep up with. They were going to close down, but when we at LEILANI’S heard of this we thought their Bakery was far too good to lose as an all-natural resource for the LocallyGrown community. We made an offer, it was accepted, and here we are! The equipment has been moved, the Wills’ son Brandon has come over as Master Baker, a position he has held for several years now, and all the recipes are the same, so it’s the same great products, just prepared in a new, upgraded location.

So what does this mean for you as a customer? Well, first of all, you can still order the amazing Baked Goods you have come to rely on. Secondly, during Harvest pickup there will now be additional Bread, Cookies Dessert Breads, Bagels, and a lot more out on the Harvest tables for you to see and consider. And should you need a great side dish or appetizer you’ll see offerings like Greek Pasta Salad, Organic Veggie Cream Cheese Spread, and Hot Pepper Peach Cheese Logs in the Retail Cooler. You’ll also see the full range of handmade Jams, Jellies, and Preserves, many made with fresh-picked organic fruits. All in all it’s a big “get” for our Dawson Harvest customers, and we’re delighted that MY DAILY BREAD will continue to be with us for many years to come!
